Description

Sculpey is one of the oldest names in polymer clay, going back to the late 1960s, and it is made in the United States.

Sculpey Soufflé is the lightweight member of the family, and the one to reach for when a piece has to survive being worn rather than sit on a shelf. It bakes to a matte, suede-like surface — closer to hard craft foam than to plastic — and it stays genuinely flexible afterwards.

It is the kindest clay in the range on your hands. Ginger Davis Allman calls it “probably the best polymer clay brand for those with weak hands or arthritis” — it conditions with very little effort, which matters if you work long sessions, or if conditioning is the part that stops you.

On the bar size. A standard Soufflé bar is 1.7 oz where a Premo bar is 2 oz, and the large is 7 oz against Premo’s 8 oz. That is not less clay — the bars are the same size. Soufflé is simply a lighter material, which is the whole point of it: a finished piece weighs less on the ear or at the throat.

The color you mix is the color you bake. Soufflé shows no color shift in the oven at all, so what you blend on the bench is what comes out. The range is opaque, toned shades rather than pure primaries — muted and modern rather than bright.

Where it is not the right choice: it is soft, so it will not hold crisp fine detail the way Premo does; it gets sticky if you roll it very thin; and it will not buff up to a high gloss — the matte surface is the point. If you want shine, varnish it rather than fight it. For fine detail or caning, Sculpey Premo is the better clay.

Baking. Sculpey cures at 275°F (130°C). Give it a full 30 minutes for every ¼ inch of thickness — a half-inch piece wants an hour, and there is no penalty for going longer at the right temperature. Underbaking, not the clay, is the usual reason a finished piece turns out weak and crumbly, and most home ovens run well off their dial, so an oven thermometer is the single best thing you can add to your setup.
