A texture sheet for pressing pattern into polymer clay, cut from deep-etched rubber. Rubber holds a finer, deeper line than molded plastic does, so the impression comes out crisp all the way into the corners rather than softening at the edges.

It is not only for polymer clay — the same sheet works on metal clay, in metal etching, and on fabric and paper.

About the designer. Helen Breil is a polymer clay artist and teacher known for bold lines, rich textures and saturated color, and she is an innovator before she is a stylist — her reputation rests on the construction methods and techniques she has worked out and taught, as much as on the look of the finished pieces. These sheets come out of that practice rather than from a catalog.

You may sell what you make with it. Helen Breil grants that outright: impressions from these sheets can be used in your own work whether it is for personal use or for sale. That is worth checking before you buy any texture sheet, because plenty of them do not allow it, and finding out after you have built a product line around one is an expensive way to learn.

Using it. The pasta machine is the method Helen Breil herself prefers, and it gives the most even result: condition the clay at a medium-thin setting, then run the clay and the sheet through together on the machine’s widest setting. Machines differ, so write down the setting that works — you will want it again.

If the sheet is too thick for your machine, her alternative is refreshingly low-tech: stack the sheet, the clay and a piece of parchment on a hard floor, parchment side up, and step on the pile until the impression takes.

If the clay is sticky, spray the sheet with water first, or brush the clay with cornstarch. For an inverse texture, a release such as Armor All works.

Before the first use, wash it with mild soap and water to take off the residue left from manufacturing — it will print more cleanly afterwards. The design name is molded into one edge, which is how you tell them apart once you own several.

Helen Breil lists us on her own site as one of only three US retailers for these, so what you get here comes through the proper channel rather than a reseller.
